Tea time: Lilies on Brougham, Melbourne (tea house)

Lilie’s on Brougham, Eltham, Melbourne

Lilies is the most perfect looking little cafe/nursery/gift shop in the Northern suburbs. Run by a big sister/little sister team who love all things French provincial, it’s set in a gorgeous little garden in Eltham. The ladies sell items from their homewear business, Lily & Lulu, but the big draw card for me has always been the food, as it was when I wrote my first blog post about this place back in 2011.

They do a delicious breakfast set, and an equally impressive lunch menu, but when I go, it’s usually for tea and cake. The cake display at the counter is always mouth-wateringly good, making decisions a seriously tough business… This time, we went with a lemon tart and a slice of boysenberry & yoghurt cake.

The lemon tart had a perfect base, buttery and crumbly, and the curd was silky smooth.

My favourite (husband’s too) was the cake – warmed up and drizzled with yoghurt frosting, it was the perfect afternoon tea cake. It was also gluten free (one of the few options available), moist, light and not too sweet.

It’s a crazy popular place, always busy (highly recommend booking a table for breakfast or lunch, particularly weekends), an deservedly so. Breakfasts, lunches and cake breaks there are all equally fantastic, and it’s a really perfect example of the magic that can happen when you have simple, good quality food in a beautiful natural setting.

  1. The drawcard at Lily’s for me is wandering through the extraordinary garden out the back- a garden which has inspired my home garden, and going upstrairs , above the Faux French stuff to the lovely clothes. although the range is not cheap, they have some gems up there.
