Eat here: Uncle & Jak, Melbourne (café/brunch)

Uncle & Jak
30 Johnston St, Fitzroy

Things got a little out of control on the weekend; we went out for breakfast on Saturday morning at around 8.30am, and got home at 4pm… oops. The problem is that Melbourne is awesome. There’s so/too much to see and do and eat, so we just decided to roll with it and see where the day took us! But it all started with breaky at Uncle & Jak.

It’s tucked away on the Spanish/Mexican side of Johnston St, far enough away from Brunswick and Smith Streets that it’s still pretty quiet and easy to get a table on the weekend – happy days! They also have an absolutely phenomenal menu with at least 5 things I desperately wanted to try; ordering was really tough.

Eventually, husband decided on the pan con chicharron – a bagel piled high with crispy pork belly, aji sauce, bacon jam, coz lettuce, salsa criolla, and sweet potato chips with cumin salt ($19.50). It was so colourful and beautiful, the pork had the most perfectly crispy shell, and the bagel was nice and big to hold it all in. I grabbed a bite of pork off the top of the pile and it was fantastic.

I struggled to pick between the pandan leaf pannacotta with mango tapioca, the rose water chia pudding and a few others, but finally the black ride porridge won out ($14.50) with the promise of passion fruit, raspberry, cranberries, coconut, lychee and crumbed hazelnuts. It was absolutely the right decision; I’ve never had rice “porridge” before, but I do love black rice, and this was soooo tasty! It couldn’t have been any prettier, and I couldn’t have been happier to find it chock full of toppings – nothing worse than being promised lychees and getting only one. Everything worked perfectly and the black rice underneath it all was so thick and warm – magic breakfast!

Tea and coffee were delicious, too, service was quick, smiley and friendly, people watching was brilliant, vibe was happy and chilled out, it was just a really great start to the morning! I can’t wait to get back and work my way through the menu – that pandan leaf pannacotta is screaming my name!
